The story follows a new hero named Shazam, who gains media attention for his sudden appearance and polite behavior. In reality, he is a young orphan named Billy Batson. When Superman encounters the Monster Society of Evil stealing food for their master, Mister Mind, he calls on Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and Green Lantern for help. Shazam joins them, forcing the Society to retreat. Impressed, the Justice League invites Shazam to the Hall of Justice, but he refuses, fearing they would reject him if they knew his true age. He visits the Rock of Eternity to consult the Wizard, who advises him to be more open. Sensing trouble, the Wizard sends Shazam to investigate.
At the Monster Society's hideout, Mister Mind captures the League and uses a serum from Doctor Sivana to turn them into children, making them vulnerable to his mind control. Batman escapes the de-aging and avoids control, retreating to the Batcave with Shazam's help. Reluctant to trust him, Batman learns Shazam's secret identity and hears his origin: after helping Batman fight Two-Face, Billy continued his daily life while helping others, eventually being led to a subway station and a magic train to the Rock. There, the Wizard reveals he tested Billy's purity of heart, seeking a new champion after Black Adam became corrupted and was sealed away. Billy accepts the powers and enjoys his alter ego, but still longs for a family. Batman empathizes, shares his own identity, and offers trust.
The mind-controlled Leaguers steal food worldwide, but Batman and Shazam free them. Reunited, the League infiltrates the Society's lair and defeats them. They find Mister Mind has metamorphosed into a giant moth monster. The group escapes to the Rock of E
